With a new 2013 Impact Factor of 2.343, pss (RRL) – Rapid Research Letters continues to be one of the most attractive journals striving for fast publication of high-quality research in solid state physics and physical materials science. Silicon and other materials systems are now being concentrated in the regular section rrl solar, offering authors the opportunity to be first in reporting their latest research in the highly competitive field of photovoltaics. The journal’s content is much inspired by Focus Issues on hot topics such as topological insulators, semiconductor nanowires, functional oxides and spintronics (R. Sbiaa et al., Materials with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy for magnetic random access memory, 30 citations). This has also led to a strong increase in its latest Immediacy Index to 0.72 (+36% vs. 0.527 in 2012).

The impact factor of the Journal of Biophotonics has increased by 24% to reach a 2013 impact factor of 3.856, demonstrating that the journal retains its position as an inherent part of the worldwide biophotonics community. Outstanding contributions like Correlation map optical coherence tomography by. M. Leahy et al. and Gold nanorods as new nanochromophores for photothermal therapies by F. Ratto et al. show the broad spectrum of topics covered by the Journal of Biophotonics. The journal publishes cutting edge research in the fields of life science, medicine, physics, chemistry, and engineering, covering fundamental research and specific developments, as well as latest applications.

With a 2013 Impact Factor of 1.483 the Wiley flagship journal Annalen der Physik consolidated its recent progress in the vast field of general physics. Additionally, the Immediacy Index of 1.24 (up from 0.843) provides an early indication of a future positive trend. Excellent topical issues and reviews spanning fromdark matter to optomechanics make Annalen der Physik the place where physicists such as the 2013 Nobel Prize Winners feel at home and publish as their first choice.

The 2013 Impact Factor of pss (a) – applications and materials science remains at an all-time high of 1.525, with major citations contributions coming from topics such as hydrogen storage materials (L. H. Rude et al, Tailoring properties of borohydrides for hydrogen storage: A review, 70 citations), solid-state lighting (Roland Haitz and Jeffrey Tsao, Solid-state lighting: ‘The case’ 10 years after and future prospects, 35 citations), magnetic nanostructures, solar cells, and advanced semiconductor materials and devices.

Fundamental condensed matter and materials physics in pss (b) – basic solid state physics was bustling with advanced density functional theory methods (A. Pasquarello and co-workers, Defect levels through hybrid density functionals: Insights and applications, 55 citations) as well as renewed interest in long-acquainted semiconductors for sustainable electronics (B. K. Meyer et al., Binary copper oxide semiconductors: From materials towards devices, 27 citations), alongside the persistently busy graphene. Consequently the 2013 Impact Factor has further climbed to 1.605(+7.8% vs. 1.489 in 2012).
