Thomson ISI today released their journal impact factor report for 2012 – we’ve taken a look at the results from materials physics, and here are some of the highlights from this year.

pss-front-coverThe 2012 impact factor of the flagship solid state physics and materials science letters journal pss (Rapid Research Letters) has seen an increase of 7.57% to 2.388. Major citation contributions have come from solar cell and plasmonics-related research, from papers such as:

The impact factor of pss (a) – applications and materials science is 1.469,closely following pss (b) – basic solid state physics at 1.489. A highlight, currently with 94 citations, is the feature article by Joachim Piprek on efficiency droop in nitride-based LEDs. Topics such as semiconducting oxides and nano- or microwaves have also perfomed very strongly in pss (a) in 2010/11. On the more fundamental condensed matter side, highly cited fields in pss (b) include first-principles calculation techniques, quantum criticality, and graphene-related materials.

The impact factor of Crystal Research and Technology has regularly increased in recent years but this year has passed the symbolic 1.0 threshold to reach a 2012 Impact Factor of 1.12. The topics it covers are quite unique in that, while crystallography remains its core topic, its focus on the applications side of research has slowly led it to expand in the direction of materials science.

lpr-coverSince 2007 Laser & Photonics Reviews has been known as the prime journal for review articles in the field of optics, laser technology and photonics. In 2012 the journal successfully opened up its portfolio by including original papers and letters. This year, with its new impact factor of 7.976, the journal has retained its top two position in the field of optics, a position it has enjoyed for several years.

Annalen der Physikone of the most famous physics journals in history, was restructured in 2012 and appears with many new features, such as Expert Opinions, historical Then & Now articles, and Perspectives & Views articles. Although the 2012 impact factor does not reflect these changes (they will be considered in the calculations for the 2014 impact factor), it has increased this year by almost 80%.

acta-crystallographica-D-front-coverActa Crystallographica Section D: Biological Crystallography leads the Biophysics rankings with its highest ever impact factor of 14.1, the third successive increase. In addition to taking the number one spot in Biophysics, the journal is also No. 1 in Crystallography, No. 2 in Biochemical Research Methods and No. 7 in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.

Acta Cryst. D covers any aspect of structural biology, with a particular emphasis on the structures of biological macromolecules and the methods used to determine them. Click here to view its most cited articles.
