Best of pss 2010

The editors of the physica status solidi journal family are proud to present the inaugural edition of Best of pss, a special selection of highlight articles from the past year. It has been assembled on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of pss which we are celebrating throughout the year 2011.

Once again, it has been a challenging task to compile this collection which represents the broad spectrum of scientific areas published in the four pss journals. 18 articles (Rapid Research Letters, Feature Articles, Original Papers and an Expert Opinion commentary) prove impressively that solid state physics continues to be a lively, diverse and very active research field. Papers range from energy-related topics such as photovoltaics, solid-state lighting, photonics and lithium batteries over basic structural or electronic properties of solids and interfaces to properties of advanced semiconducting, ferroic or superconducting oxides and corresponding devices. As shown by an article authored by the recent Physics Nobel Prize winner Kostya Novoselov, graphene and related carbon systems are also becoming ever more important for our community.
